Dr. Jai Kumar, MD
How many years have you been practicing and where did you graduate from?
I graduated from Duke University Medical School in 1994. I've been practicing medicine for 31 years.
What do you enjoy most about serving Appalachian Mountain Health patients here in Western NC?
I started treating children in this region in 2000. For almost two decades, I rounded on ill youth at Harris Regional Hospital, and I worked at the Sylva Pediatric Associates branches in Sylva, Bryson City, Franklin, and Robbinsville. My partners and I ran Sylva Pediatrics with the goal of excellence over profit. Eventually, keeping the lights on became a struggle. The practice switched hands to Mission Children's for a few years and then to a young new organization - Appalachian Mountain Health, where I learned what an 'FQHC' or a 'community health center' was. During the organization's first few years, I was the only pediatrician, despite this network of clinics spanning from Asheville to Murphy. Over time, five additional pediatric providers have been added. I have been pleased to watch the leadership of this organization demonstrate their commitment to quality, sustainability, and expansion of services over profit. I can treat my patients with the best resources and eager staff and ample time. And I'm proud that AMH has addressed two major gaps in children's healthcare: they brought in pediatric psychiatrists and an army of dentists. I look forward to being a part of AMH's growth - because it is grounded in good values and caring.
What is your approach to patient care?
I try to listen carefully and to be thorough.
What is one piece of health advice you find challenging to follow yourself?
I should exercise more regularly.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
Lulu's in Sylva had been a favorite.
Do you have any special interests?
A typical day at the office would see me treating everything from newborns with reflux to college students with depression. I enjoy the full spectrum of pediatrics.
What languages are you fluent in?
English and French.
