Vanessa Lewis, MSN, WHNP-BC

How many years have you been practicing and where did you graduate from?

I have been practicing as a nurse since 2008 and became a Board-Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner in 2023. I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from Frontier Nursing University, graduating with high honors. Prior to that, I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Fayetteville State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. I am a two-time recipient of the Department of the Army Civilian Service Achievement Medal (CSAM) in recognition of nursing excellence, leadership, and significant contributions to Army women's health programs.

What do you enjoy most about serving Appalachian Mountain Health patients here in Western NC?

Serving patients in Western North Carolina reminds me of the small mountain town where I lived in Germany while working as a civilian nurse for a U.S. Army Garrison. I spent eight years there, and I find many similarities between that community and the culture of Appalachia—tight-knit, resilient, deeply rooted in tradition/ culture, and surrounded by beautiful landscapes. What I enjoy most is being able to provide a much-needed service in an area where access to women’s health specialists is extremely limited. It’s rewarding to make a meaningful difference and to care for multiple generations within the same family.

What is your approach to patient care?

My approach is grounded in trust, respect, and evidence-based care, always centered on each patient’s individual goals for their unique reproductive health journey. I don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach - instead, I meet each person where they are, listen closely to their needs and priorities, and work collaboratively to find the best solution to help them in that moment.

What is one piece of health advice you find challenging to follow yourself?

Hydration! I always encourage my patients to drink plenty of water, but I’ll admit—it’s something I still remind myself to prioritize. On busy days, it’s easy to get caught up and not drink as much as I recommend. I’m working on being more intentional about it, just like I encourage my patients to be.

What is your favorite local restaurant?

Brother’s at Willow Ranch in Young Harris. They have amazing steak!

Do you have any special interests?

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and exploring new places—I’ve visited 18 countries so far, and I’m always planning the next adventure. I also enjoy gardening and baking anything sourdough related (bread, pancakes, cinnamon rolls, cookies, etc.)!

Professionally, I’m passionate about all aspects of women’s health care and committed to continuous learning. My professional goals include obtaining additional women’s health-specific certifications and earning a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree.

What languages are you fluent in?

I am fluent in English.
